Charles Clair on BFM TV: the role of the A400M in firefighting
Published on 2 August 2026 · Clair Group · Press reviewThe A400M now brings a unique capability to fighting forest fires. Unlike Canadairs, which scoop up water and drop it directly on the flames, the A400M can release up to 20 tonnes of retardant or water from a very large hold, allowing it to quickly create long protective barriers ahead of a fire front to slow its spread and protect sensitive areas.
On BFM TV, I explained why it is essential to understand that each aerial asset has a very specific role: Canadair, Air Tractor, helicopters and now the A400M. It's not a question of replacing one aircraft with another, but of using them in a complementary way to be as effective as possible against increasingly intense fires.
